Some race tracks host races. North Wilkesboro Speedway tells the story of NASCAR itself.

This weekend, that story enters a new chapter as the Window World 450 marks the first NASCAR Cup Series points-paying race at the legendary, five-eighths-mile oval in 30 years. For the first time since September 1996, championship points—not just pride—will be on the line at one of the sport's most iconic venues.

For generations of race fans, North Wilkesboro represents NASCAR's foundation. Built in 1947 as a dirt oval and hosting Cup Series competition beginning in 1949, the speedway became synonymous with legends like Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Junior Johnson and Darrell Waltrip. Ninety-three NASCAR Cup Series points races were contested on its worn asphalt before the final checkered flag fell in 1996, seemingly closing the book on one of stock car racing's most treasured venues.

But the story didn't end there.

What was once considered one of motorsports' greatest "what-ifs" became one of its greatest comeback stories.

Following an ambitious restoration effort led by Speedway Motorsports in partnership with NASCAR and state and local leaders, North Wilkesboro Speedway returned to national prominence in 2023 as the home of the NASCAR All-Star Race. The revival proved what longtime fans had always believed: this historic short track still belonged on NASCAR's biggest stage. Three successful All-Star weekends reignited the passion surrounding the facility and introduced an entirely new generation of fans to one of the sport's most authentic experiences.

Now, North Wilkesboro takes its biggest step yet.

The Window World 450 returns championship racing to the speedway for the first time in three decades, making history with the longest NASCAR Cup Series race ever held at the venue. More than a milestone event, the race symbolizes the continued evolution of one of America's most remarkable sports venue revitalization projects.

The weekend extends well beyond Sunday's green flag. Fans will enjoy four days of racing and entertainment, including a zMAX CARS Tour doubleheader featuring Chase Elliott, Corey Heim and many of short-track racing's biggest names, a star-studded FaithFest 250 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race, fan experiences throughout the property, and a free pre-race concert from Sawyer Brown presented by Raymer Oil before Sunday's historic Cup race.

For Speedway Motorsports, North Wilkesboro represents more than preserving history—it demonstrates what's possible when heritage and innovation come together. The facility has evolved with new premium hospitality offerings, expanded fan experiences and modern amenities while maintaining the character that made it one of NASCAR's most beloved race tracks.

The result is a venue unlike any other on the NASCAR schedule.

It's where longtime fans can relive cherished memories and first-time visitors can experience the authenticity that helped build the sport. It's where racing's past meets its future, creating an atmosphere that cannot be replicated anywhere else.

Thirty years ago, few could have imagined championship racing would once again echo through the foothills of Wilkes County.

This weekend, it becomes reality.

Because some tracks make history.

North Wilkesboro Speedway is history—and now, it's making it once again.
